Larkspur

Rusty danced around Larkspur, trading taunts and jeers with the pretty amethyst-eyed pirate who’d been one of the Scarlet Hand’s best fighters back when she’d sailed on the Fiery Dragon. He’d grown up in a brothel in Metropoli and learned to fight on the docks and in backstreet alleys. Rumors onboard had said he was fast and mean. And the rumors weren’t wrong—Rusty had seen him in action when they’d battled Captain Spider to win back the Crimson Fin.

Larkspur’s eyes glinted, the fire on the mast behind him wreathing his head in a flaming halo.

Every night on the Salty Flame, Rusty had trained for this encounter—and for meeting the Scarlet Hand in battle. She’d drilled for endless hours with Joffa and her first and second mate. They’d discussed strategy, held Rusty in impossible locks, and made her get free. They’d jammed blades under her throat, shown her defensive moves, and how to free yourself when you were smaller and lighter than a skilled opponent. She’d fed them information about the Scarlet Hand’s fighting style—and the gods knew she was familiar with his style after being trained by him—and about Larkspur’s techniques with blades and his swift grace. And she’d never let anyone else see her fight, so no one could blab about her fighting technique or anticipate her moves. Over and over, their feet had thudded across the deck at night on the Salty Flame as she’d prepared for this.

What if it wasn’t enough?

No, it had to be. Too many lives were on the line. There was no alternative. Rusty had to face Larkspur and win.

Beyond the burning mast, Sadie kicked a pirate in the jaw. The pirate’s head snapped back, and he sailed through the air and smacked into a wooden crate on deck. Inara clashed blades with a gangly pirate who was driving her back toward the burning mast. Stormy rushed in to help, but a meaty man grabbed her silver braid and yanked it hard.

She let out a bloodcurdling shriek. Larkspur spun as Stormy unleashed her fury on the meaty pirate, slashing and whirling in a rage that had the man on his knees within moments, a gaping gash in his chest and astonishment blossoming across his face. Stormy kicked him in the chest, blood spraying. Gurgling his last breath, he collapsed to the deck.

“No one yanks my hair,” she screeched.

Belting across the deck, Stormy swooped in to help Inara, right as Larkspur spun back to find Rusty’s blade at his throat.
